Deployment Trajectory Test

Deployment Trajectory Test

ARL designed a customized deployment trajectory test using a high-speed video camera for a client’s satellite separation system. Read more below!

At Austin Reliability Labs (ARL), we are proud to have the facilities, equipment and knowledge that allow us to perform a wide range of reliability testing to meet established benchmarks in a variety of industries. We work closely with our clients to determine the tests that best fit the product, and document a testing road map that is appropriate, useful and comprehensive. We also recognize the specific needs of our clients and draw upon our test experience to design unique solutions that address client concerns.

One of our recent clients required multiple test sequences of their satellite separation system for compliance purposes. This satellite separation system is created for specific mission requirements and consists of two different portions – one that remains attached to the satellite after separation and one that stays behind on the deployer. ARL was able to provide both mechanical and environmental testing by subjecting the satellite separation system to vibration and temperature tests. Random vibration levels were tested in order to prove compliance to International Space Station requirements and temperature testing was performed to verify the deployment and functionality of the satellite separation system at low and high temperatures.

While mechanical and environmental testing are relatively standard during product development, our client also wanted to measure deployment trajectory for mission assurance. ARL was able to design a customized deployment trajectory test using a high-speed video camera to capture various angles of release. The high-speed video was captured in two mutually perpendicular axes, which was then analyzed using motion capture software at a frame-by-frame rate of 1,500 frames per second in order to determine velocity, pitch and yaw.

This client’s out-of-the-box testing needs were a unique challenge for our team and an exciting opportunity to develop custom tests and employ high-speed video. We are proud to offer all our clients a partnership in which we achieve our goals together.
